Called Up to Life is an original, klezmer musical by award-winning composer Arthur Levine. It is about the charismatic rabbi, Israel Ben Eliezer who became known as the Baal Shem Tov (the Master of the Good Name). His life was the stuff of legends. The story line: in 1780, a group of the followers of the Baal Shem Tov (BESHT) meet to spend the Sabbath. They entertain each other by telling tales of the
BESHT. An elderly traveler appears who claimed to have known the BESHT. Maybe he did, maybe he didn't. Eventually, his memory returns and he unlocks a mystery for the Sabbath host. The musical has humor, pathos, celebration of the human spirit, and a wonderful score.
Performance dates: June 11-27, 2010, Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 pm, Sunday matinees at 2:00 pm at the Gaithersburg Arts Barn.
Note: We will be making a CD of the original cast recording and a DVD of the show.
